Intro to Racial Equity for White People
Time & Location
About The Event
Intro to Equity is designed to help people who are interested in learning more about equity but who haven't had a lot of formal training yet. This track is specifically designed for those who have been socialized as white. (There is a separate course for people socialized as people of color.) The session will help participants understand the creation of race and whiteness in the U.S., explore privilege, and examine their own racial identity development. Racial identity is used as an entry point for exploration and will be discussed throughout the day; however, race is not our only identity marker, and we will explore how race intersects with various other identities as well. Participants should be ready to think about class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, and more. We invite you to come with questions, come with curiosity, and come prepared to build and strengthen relationships.
This offering is specifically designed for people who have been socialized as white. (There is a separate course for those socialized as people of color.) Although it is important to engage in equity work with people with all sorts of backgrounds, it is important too to recognize that our life experiences are not the same. Occasional separate learning spaces allow vulnerability, risk-taking, and healing that cannot happen the same way in mixed spaces. For example, white people are often hesitant to ask certain questions or discuss experiences that need processing for fear of offending their friends of color. People of color in mixed learning space may feel they are unable to do their own learning because they are too busy telling their life stories so that white people can learn from them. Separate spaces can allow us freedom from these barriers to growth. Please feel free to contact us if you have further questions about this practice.
Snacks and water will be provided throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch. You will receive more details about how to prepare as the event date approaches.
