About The Event

Intro to Equity is designed to help people who are interested in learning more about equity and intersectionality but who haven't had a lot of formal training yet. The session will session will help participants understand terms like equity and inclusion, learn about the cycle of socialization, explore their own social identities (and confront the false idea of a hierarchy of oppression), and break down the four levels of oppression. Racial identity is used as an entry point for exploration and will be discussed throughout the day; however, race is not our only identity marker, and we will explore how race intersects with various other identities as well. Participants should be ready to think about class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, and more. We invite you to come with questions, come with curiosity, and come prepared to build and strengthen relationships.

This offering is specifically designed for those who have been socialized as people of color. (There is a separate course for people socialized as white.) Although it is important to engage in equity work with people with all sorts of backgrounds, it is important too to recognize that our life experiences are not the same. Occasional separate learning spaces allow vulnerability, risk-taking, and healing that cannot happen the same way in mixed spaces. Please feel free to contact us if you have further questions about this practice.

Snacks and water will be provided throughout the day. Please bring your own lunch. You will receive more details about how to prepare as the event date approaches.

NOTE: $60 is the recommended price. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you're interested and available, please register no matter what your financial situation. If you need a scholarship, simply say for how much in the comment box when you register. Select "manual payment" for the payment type.
